Should Port-au-Prince be Recycled?

This article brings an interesting subject on recycling construction materials from natural disaster.
It sounds like a pretty good idea specially if take into account the cost of shipping materials to the island to reconstruct the city.

Is anyone more familiar with the process of recycling construction materials?
Why is this not being done more often?

  1. Its probably the fact that many people are too lazy to sort through tons of concrete, steel, and other debris OR it might be the fact that recycling such large amounts of debris would take too much time. But whatever the reason, I still think that Port-au-Prince should be recycled. Is there a swift way to recycle the material from the earthquake and use it for the new location? Because, if not, then the citizens of Port-au-Prince will have to wait a while before they could live in their new recycled homes.

  2. If they paid people to sort through the material (job creation!), I think people would be much less lazy. However, where would all that funding come from?
